The “Reflective Tribute,” unveiled in 2001, is a veterans memorial dedicated to Upper Iowa University students who served in the Second World War. The memorial features a life-size bronze statue of Navy Ensign James Beneke, a UIU student who was killed in the war. A bronze relief sculpture of Beneke in his football uniform is placed directly across from the statue, symbolizing the sacrifice he and other student soldiers made for their country. A nearby memorial plaque lists the names of the other UIU students lost during the war. The memorial is located in a 25' x 18' stone plaza surrounded by stone benches and pillars. The plaza is part of a larger project to revitalize the area around the university's W.W.II Memorial. The Reflective Tribute is a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by the UIU students who served in World War II, and it is a place where the university community can reflect on their legacy.
