The “George Soumas Memorial,” unveiled in 2002, is a life-sized bronze sculpture of George Soumas, a prominent figure in the Perry, Iowa community. Soumas, the son of Greek immigrants, was a World War II hero, mayor, judge, county attorney, storyteller, and friend. He grew up playing in the alley behind his parents' store, The Majestic Shoe Shop. The sculpture, created by Iowa artist Chris Bennett, depicts Soumas seated at a table in Soumas Court, an outdoor courtyard named after him. Soumas Court is located between the Hotel Pattee and the Town/Craft Center. The sculpture is a focal point for this serene central parkway, honoring Soumas' legacy and contributions to the community.
