"Descending Strength, Ascending Peace" is a community veterans memorial at the corner of 5th Street and Grand Avenue in Ames, Iowa. Unveiled in 2006, this extensive installation features a 50' x 75' landscaped area, anchored by a 27-foot diameter plaza and illuminated by a captivating light fountain. Central to the artwork’s design is a striking "furling" bronze wall, measuring 10.5 feet in height and 21 feet in length. A life-size sculpture of a flying eagle and an over-life-size dove are attached to the wall. The memorial artfully combines three powerful American symbols: Strength, represented by the eagle; Unity, symbolized by the flag; and Peace, embodied by the dove. A star etched into the plaza concrete is central to our constitutional rights carved on granite blocks. The six branches of the military—Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Merchant Marines, and Navy—are referenced on six limestone block benches. A berm and stone wall on the outer edge of the plaza help to provide a reflective space for visitors. This thoughtful installation is a lasting tribute to the sacrifices made by veterans, inviting all who visit to remember and honor their bravery.
