This 15-foot-tall bronze sculpture is the centerpiece of a memorial dedicated to military chaplains. It's located within a landscaped outdoor chapel measuring 185 feet by 90 feet, commissioned by the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa in 1994. The sculpture features a large pair of cupped hands, supported by a series of short poles. These hands, reaching towards the heavens, symbolize the prayerful nature of the memorial. Surrounding this central piece is a circular plaza with a walkway adorned with benches, depictions of chaplains from various religious backgrounds, and symbols representing diverse beliefs. Dedicated to the Chaplaincy Corps of the Military Services, established in 1775 at the urging of General George Washington, the memorial honors those who have provided spiritual guidance and comfort to soldiers and their families. The memorial's design and symbolism create a serene and reflective space where visitors can contemplate the sacrifices made by military chaplains and honor their commitment to service and peace.
